TWI has welcomed the first Lloyd’s Register Foundation PhD student to the newly established National Structural Integrity Research Centre (NSIRC).

Laura Vivar, who is working in the specialist materials and joining team, officially started her PhD programme on 1 November and will be supervised by Sanjeev Naik.

A student of the University of Leeds and sponsored by the Lloyd’s Register Foundation, Laura’s research topic is ‘The influence of additives on the corrosion resistance of wet film coatings’.

Laura said: ‘I am so glad to be here at TWI, and grateful to the Lloyd’s Register Foundation. The people at TWI are nice and friendly, the work environment is really good and although I only started a few weeks ago I am already learning a lot.

‘I wanted to do a PhD, and to do it at TWI with Lloyd’s Register Foundation support is a great opportunity because you have both academic and industrial focus.’
